IELTS 2020 Exam – Dates, Syllabus, Eligibility & Registration

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency exam that evaluates individuals on their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English and it is one of the most common and accepted tests for international students and immigration while traveling to an English speaking country.

The test is conducted by the British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment, and IDP-IELTS Australia, and the test is divided into two parts namely Academic Exam and General Training Exam. The academic exam is primarily for students going to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate level education in an English speaking country while the general training exam is for work purposes or students going to pursue secondary education.

IELTS Exam Dates 2020

IELTS is conducted four times a month (Saturdays or Thursdays) throughout the year in78 locations across the country. Students can book the dates according to their university admission timeline and it is advised that they give the exam in advance to their application so that they can have time to improve if needed.

IELTS Exam Registration

The registration of IELTS can be done on their official websites. Go to the website and click on the ‘register for the test’, and click on your preferred type of test, your location, and center, slot and finally pay the application fee. You will also need to fill in the application form and upload a passport size photograph. The application fee for IELTS currently is INR 14, 000 as of May 2020.

IELTS Exam Pattern

The test pattern is designed according to the four modules of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The entire exam is for 2 hours and 45 minutes and the test can be taken through the paper-based method or computer-based methods. Listening, reading, and writing can be conducted back to back but speaking may or may not be scheduled on the same day. The module wise break up is given below:

IELTS Exam Syllabus

Writing module consists of short essays or general report and there are two tasks in this module. The reading module consists of 40 questions and they include multiple-choice, short answers, summary completion, and so on. The speaking module comprises three tasks which include a personal interview, speech, and discussion. Lastly, the listening module consists of four questions which are mostly conversations based on which the student needs to answer around 40 questions. The score of IELTS is given on a band of 1-9 for each module through which they also get an overall band score.

IELTS Eligibility

There are no specific eligibility criteria or strict rules as to who can give the IELTS. It is open to any individual who wants to study or work in an English speaking country. However, if one is going for studying, they need to appear for IELTS Academic while others can appear for IELTS General Training as well. The candidates need to at least be of 16 years of age.
