The International English Language Testing System

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally acclaimed as well as standardised for assessing the English language proficiency for non-native English language speaking candidates that aspire to travel to various parts of the globe for study and/ or immigration purposes. It is a mandatory English proficiency test taken by British, Australian, and New Zealand, Canadian & US universities for secondary, vocational, higher education & research programs. IELTS is concurrently managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia. IELTS examination has two types with minor differences between the two: IELTS Academic (study purpose) and IELTS General Training (immigration purpose).


Listening: Checks the ability of the student to listen and understand English in non-native accent. 

  • Total Questions: 40
  • Total Sections: 4 (average 10 questions in each)
  • Total Time: 30 minutes (testing) + 10 minutes (transferring answers)

Reading : Checks the ability of the student to read and comprehend the passages.

  • Passages: 3(academic) / 5(general training)
  • Total Time: 60minutes

Writing: Checks the ability of the student to understand and interpret the questions correctly and answer all the parts aptly.

  • Total Tasks: 2
  • Task 1: report writing (academic) OR letter writing (general training)
  • Task 2: essay writing
  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Word Count: 150-180 (task 1); 250-280 (task 2)

Speaking: Face to face interview conducted by the examiner to check the ability of the student to communicate influent and grammatically accurate English.

  • Total Time: approximately 15minutes
  • Section 1: Introduction round (4-5 minutes)
  • Section 2: Lon turn (Cue card) round (3-4 minutes)
  • Section 3: Discussion round (4-5 minutes)
