The higher education institutions in the US are not centrally managed but are accredited on a national or regional level by independent accrediting bodies. The colleges and universities basically offers three basic programs:
- Associate’s Degree – An academic program taken by students after secondary school, prior to a Bachelors course. It provides students with basic academic and technical knowledge plus the skills necessary for employment or for furthering their education.
- Undergraduate Degree – The duration of undergraduate programs in the US is four years. Since associate degrees are cheaper than bachelor degrees, many Americans prefer to go through two years of associate degree leading to two years of their chosen undergraduate program.
- Postgraduate Degree – Master degrees in the US vary from one to two years.
For an Undergraduate Degree:
- Successful completion of the international equivalent of US/Canadian secondary education (Year 12)
- Diploma or acceptable certification of graduation from High School in your home country
- English language ability :
- TOEFL iBT: 80+
- IELTS 6+ bands
- SAT 1100+
- Proven academic achievement demonstrating your ability to succeed in university-level studies
For a Postgraduate Degree:
- International equivalent of a North American four-year Bachelor’s degree program from an accredited university
- If you have a three-year Bachelor’s degree or diploma, you can complete a qualifying Pre-Master’s program first
- Official transcripts for all colleges/universities attended
- English language ability

Any student wanting to obtain an admission in the US university must apply for their student visa. Obtaining your student visa can be a lengthy process,so make sure you start preparing well in advance. In general, prospective students will need to go through the below process in order to successfully reach their study destination:
Working while studying can be a great opportunity to earn money while in the US, and international students can expect to make at least minimum wage. Different student visas have different rules and limits for allowing international students to pick up part-time jobs during their course of study in the US. Being an International student, the job hunting process can sometimes become a bit difficult but it’s always good to plan ahead. You must keep a track of rules and regulations that affect your employment status in the United States – both as a graduate and after graduation.
Unless you have obtained a special permission by the Designated School Official (DSO), you are not allowed to take up work k in the first year at the US university, college or institution. You can work for a maximum of 20 hours per week on-campus while the university is in session, and 40 hours per week during vacation period. Once you have completed your one full academic year, you can look for off-campus employment upon authorization by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). There are basically 3 options for off-campus employment:
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
- Optional Practical Training (OPT)
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training Extension (OPT)
